Florida Highway Patrol trooper injured in drunk driving accident

Driving while under the influence of alcohol is never acceptable. Not only is doing so against the law, it can also lead to car accidents that result in serious injury. A man was recently arrested for drunk driving after his alleged involvement in a crash with a Florida Highway Patrol trooper.

The trooper was reportedly in a closed lane within a construction zone on State Road 408 at the time of the accident. He was parked there with his cruiser's lights on to alert other motorists of the site. Officials stated that the car of the driver believed to be responsible entered the construction zone and plowed through multiple traffic cones before rear-ending the trooper's vehicle.

The officer was able to free himself from his cruiser by kicking the door open. He was then taken to the hospital with injuries, including a bruised lung. The other driver was given a field sobriety test due to allegedly having bloodshot eyes and smelling of alcohol. Reports indicate that the test read a .12. He has since been arrested for driving under the influence while causing injury.

Even though the other driver is now facing criminal charges, the trooper may still choose to file a personal injury claim against him in civil court. This personal injury claim is handled separately from any workers' compensation claims that may be applicable. This type of claim, if successfully presented, can provide monetary damages that can be used to pay medical bills and other related expenses. Anyone who has suffered injuries from a drunk driving accident could consult an experienced Florida personal injury attorney to learn more about filing this type of claim.
